The Hair Growth Cycle
Every hair on your head moves through a repeating cycle of growth, transition, and rest. Understanding these phases explains why hair grows slowly, why some daily shedding is completely normal, and why patience matters when exploring any hair-support approach.
The Process
How It Works
Anagen: The Growth Phase
Anagen is the active growth phase and lasts roughly two to six years. The majority of your hairs are in anagen at any given time, and its length largely determines how long your hair can grow.
Catagen: The Transition Phase
Catagen is a short transitional phase lasting a few weeks. The follicle shrinks and detaches from its blood supply, and active growth stops as the hair prepares to rest.
Telogen: The Resting Phase
Telogen is a resting phase of a few months. The hair remains in place but is no longer growing, and a portion of hairs are always in this phase at once.
Shedding & Renewal
At the end of telogen the old hair sheds and a new hair begins growing, restarting the cycle. Losing some hairs daily is normal because follicles are not all synchronized.
Why Consider It
Potential Benefits
- Explains why hair grows slowly and results take months to appear
- Clarifies that shedding some hairs each day is normal and expected
- Anagen length largely determines maximum hair length
- Disruptions can push more follicles into resting and shedding phases
- Illness, stress, and hormones can temporarily shift the cycle
- Many hair-support approaches aim to prolong or re-enter the growth phase
Candidacy
Who May Be a Candidate?
May Be a Good Fit
- Anyone curious about how hair actually grows and sheds
- Those wanting to understand why results take time
- People noticing increased shedding after stress or illness
- Individuals researching how different approaches are intended to work
Considerations
- The cycle is a general model and varies between individuals
- Persistent or excessive shedding still warrants evaluation
- Cycle disruptions can have many overlapping underlying causes
- Understanding phases is educational and does not replace a diagnosis
Candidacy can only be determined through an appropriate clinical evaluation. Individual results vary.
